SAWA Skilling Center

“Skills to get hired. Skills to hire”

Who We Are

SAWA Skilling Center is an impact-driven EdTech and skilling initiative based in Uganda with a Pan-African vision. We exist to break the cycles of unemployment and underemployment by equipping youth, women, and men with the practical skills they need to build dignified livelihoods.

We believe every individual is created with unique potential and a calling to contribute to their community. Through mobile-first learning, dedicated mentorship, and community-driven solutions, SAWA ensures that lack of access, digital literacy, or support does not stand in the way of a person’s ability to provide, grow, and flourish.

The Problem We Are Solving

Across Africa, untapped potential is being wasted due to three urgent challenges that drive unemployment and underemployment:

  1. The Crisis of Unemployment and Underemployment – Millions of Africans are either entirely without work or trapped in informal, unstable jobs that do not honor their dignity or provide for their families. Even those with formal education often lack the practical, market-driven skills required to earn a sustainable living.
  2. Systemic Exclusion – Men, women, and youth in rural areas, refugee settlements, and IDP camps are disproportionately cut off from economic opportunities. When entire communities are locked out of the digital economy, cycles of poverty are passed down from generation to generation.
  3. The Skills-to-Opportunity Gap – There is a deep disconnect between what the modern economy demands and what is being taught. Without mentorship to guide them, many aspiring professionals and entrepreneurs fail to translate their knowledge into viable businesses or employment.

Our Mission

To equip individuals with practical skills and mentorship, restoring dignity and opening doors to meaningful work and economic flourishing.

Our Vision

A thriving Africa where every person is empowered to fulfill their purpose.

Our Approach & Core Solutions

  • Mobile-First, Practical Learning: We offer highly practical courses optimized for basic smartphones and offline use. Our curriculum focuses on financial education, entrepreneurship and business, agribusiness, resource mobilization, digital literacy, project management, and leadership—giving learners the exact tools they need to create wealth and secure employment.
  • Mentorship That Walks Alongside Learners: We do not just offer content; we offer community. Dedicated mentors guide learners through their journey, providing the accountability, encouragement, and wisdom needed to turn skills into sustainable income.
  • Community Learning Hubs (Piloting): Hybrid, accessible learning spaces designed for those without internet or digital devices, ensuring no one is left behind regardless of their geography.

Our Impact: SDG Alignment

We are proudly advancing three core Sustainable Development Goals that directly address economic empowerment and equal access:

  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth – Our primary focus. We create clear pathways out of unemployment and underemployment into dignified work, viable entrepreneurship, and financial independence.
  • SDG 4: Quality Education – We deliver accessible, practical, and market-relevant training that meets learners exactly where they are.
  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities – By actively reaching rural communities, refugees, IDPs, and prioritizing those historically left behind, we level the economic playing field for men and women alike.

Why SAWA?

  • Economic Transformation: We focus strictly on skills that lead to hired work or the creation of hiring businesses.
  • Mentorship-Driven Support: We transform isolated learners into confident achievers through relational guidance.
  • Stewardship of Resources: Mobile-first and offline models maximize impact while adapting to the realities of underserved communities.

Looking Ahead

We are scaling our impact by:

  • Building a continent-wide mentorship network of African professionals willing to invest their wisdom in the next generation.
  • Expanding blended learning hubs to reach the most isolated and underserved communities.
